Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. George's,

Welcome to St George's and to Venice whether you are here for a week or a lifetime. We offer the only English service in Venice and we delight in greeting people from all over the world every Sunday at 10.30am.
And when we say welcome, we mean you are welcome to participate in the service, to receive communion if you are hungry for Christ, to sip prosecco with us afterwards, and to get involved with our ongoing life together.
Venice is forever wondrous, incredibly blue skies, sparkling waters, and a unique golden light suffusing everything,
Blessings to you, and to our beautiful city,

A Short History of
St George's Venice
The first Anglican Chaplain, Nathaniel A Fletcher, came to Venice in 1604, sent from Sir Henry Wotton's embassy from King James I. Anglican Chaplains always accompanied diplomatic missions until the Venetian Republic was ended by Napoleon. After the Congress of Vienna, Great Britain established a consulate in Venice and Anglican services were held here by visiting clergy.
In 1842, the Diocese of Gibraltar was established to oversee the permanent chaplaincies and to provide visiting clergy for English-speaking communities in the Mediterranean area. At the time of the unification of Italy, Revd John Davies Mereweather, Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia, settled in Venice and held Anglican services in his flat in Palazzo Contarini-Corfu until 1887.
In 1888, a committee of English residents was formed with two clergy and the Bishop of Gibraltar, to establish a permanent chaplaincy in Venice. Its members were Sir Henry Layard, Horatio Brown and Alexander Malcolm. Upon the liquidation of the Venezia-Murano Glass and Mosaic Company in 1889, title was obtained to their warehouse building in Campo San Vio. It was given to the Diocese as "the English church in Venice", and was dedicated in 1892. Ever since, Anglican services have been held here in English for the benefit of residents and visitors, apart from the years before and during the war 1935-45.
After 1945, the church became a garrison chapel, and later public services were resumed for the summer season.
During his chaplaincy of 1967-74 Canon Victor Stanley resumed year-round services, and these are still held every Sunday at 10.30am for the English-speaking residents and for the many visitors to Venice.
Our beautiful stained glass windows are dedicated to, among others, art historian John Ruskin, poet Robert Browning, and Sir Ashley Clarke who served as British Ambassador to Italy.
The painting over the altar is a copy of Giovanni Bonconsiglio's work from 1520, today housed at Spirito Santo on the Zattere. It portrays Christ on a pedestal wrapped in a large cloak inside a barrel vaulted chapel with a golden mosaic apse basin. To the left stands Sant’Erasmo in a rich red mantle holding an open book. To the right stands San Secondo, holding proudly the flag of St George.
The church doors are made from the cannons of British warships, molten and recast at the Venice Arsenale. The doors are dedicated to the fallen in The Great War.

Weddings and Baptisms
Weddings

Many congratulations on your forthcoming marriage! We are delighted that many visitors to Venice wish to celebrate their marriage in a blessing of their union at St George’s. These occasions are always joyful events for the couple, the priest, the church and for family and friends present.
So it is a privilege to be able to welcome you to St. George's for the blessing of your wedding where you will re-dedicate yourselves to God. For couples intending to travel to Venice for their special celebration, we encourage you to invite family and friends. The blessing will be a wonderful service like a marriage, when you will dedicate your vows to God in front of your witnesses, and we will pray for God's blessing on your marriage.
To arrange the service, please e-mail the Chaplain stgeorgesvenice@gmail.com to let her know why you'd like to have your marriage blessed at St George's Venice and when you'd like to have the service. The Chaplain will wish to meet with you in Venice some weeks before your intended wedding date as part of your preparation for the sacrament of marriage and to plan the service. Where it is appropriate, do bring along the written support of your parish priest from home. You are invited to select readings and hymns, flowers and photographers, to commemorate your very special day.
Unlike in the Uk, Anglican chaplains in Italy are not registrars for marriages. and therefore cannot conduct the actual legal part of marriage as recognised in law. This means that the service in church will in fact be a blessing of your marriage, and the Chaplain has to see your legal marriage certificate beforehand. You can arrange to have a civil ceremony in Venice, even on the same morning as your service of blessing, or in advance in your home town, even if that is in another country. You can find the details on the British Embassy website.
For information on the cost of celebrating your marriage at St George's, please contact the Chaplain by email stgeorgesvenice@gmail.com
Renewal of Marriage Vows

We are delighted when couples wish to celebrate a special wedding anniversary at St George's with a service in which they renew their marriage vows before God. To arrange this, please e-mail the Chaplain stgeorgesvenice@gmail.com explaining who you are, why you'd like to renew your marriage vows at St George's in Venice, and when you'd like to have the service.
Baptisms

At St George’s we're delighted to baptise children. Indeed, we baptise people of any age - babies, toddlers, children, adults - who wish to join the Christian Church and have not previously been baptised. We offer the sacrament of baptism to those who either live in our geographical parish and/or those who worship with us regularly - and occasionally those with another link but for whom this is the right church. In Baptism, we welcome a new Christian into the Church, and the best time for this is the Sunday Morning service at 10.30am when our Church Members join with you to give that welcome.
The Chaplain will want to arrange at least two meetings with you. She will ask if you have been baptised yourselves, and preferably confirmed - in infant baptism, you are going to promise to bring up your child in the Christian Faith, and bring them to confirmation. At least one of your intended Godparents must have been confirmed therefore, and all must have been baptised. The Chaplain will wish to meet you together with the Godparents before the Baptism.
St George's Safeguarding Policy
The protection from harm of children and vulnerable adults is of paramount importance to us. As a chaplaincy within the Diocese of Europe, we comply fully with the requirements of the Diocese's Safeguarding Policy*.
We will not tolerate the abuse of children or adults in any form.
Specifically, within our Chaplaincy we are committed to:

The care, nurture, and respectful pastoral ministry of all children, young persons and adults;

he safeguarding and protection of all children, young persons, and adults who may be vulnerable;

The establishment of safe, caring communities which provide a loving environment where there is a culture of 'informed vigilance' as to the dangers of abuse;

The careful selection and training of all those with any safeguarding responsibility within the Church, including the use of available criminal records disclosures and relevant vetting and barring schemes.

Preventing abuse or the likelihood of abuse by encouraging and adopting a pro-active safeguarding; responding to the slightest concern whether by rumour, speculation or from an anonymous source ;

Every safeguarding concern will be taken seriously;

That any concern about safeguarding must be passed onto someone in the Diocesan Safeguarding Team as there are no legal barriers to sharing such concerns;

Responding without delay to every complaint made which suggests that a child, young person or adult may have been harmed, co-operating with the local police, relevant local agencies and any other relevant body (eg other faith groups) in any investigation.

Seeking to work with anyone who has suffered abuse, developing with them an appropriate ministry of informed pastoral care;

Seeking to challenge any abuse of power, especially by anyone in a position of trust;

Seeking to offer pastoral care and support, including supervision and referral to the proper authorities, any member of our church community known to have offended against a child, young person or vulnerable adult;
If you have any queries, please email the Safeguarding Officer at
stgeorgesvenicefriends@gmail.com to arrange a private conversation.
